03 — Power cuts: ENWL & 105
Scope: Electricity North West (ENWL) for Cumbria; national 105; Prepare power-cut guidance; FSA food safety.
Last researched: 27 Sep 2026 (Europe/London).
ESSENTIAL
- Report / updates: Freephone 105 (England, Scotland, Wales) 24/7 — connects to local DNO (ENWL in North West). Or ENWL online: Power cuts / report form.
- Before calling — ENWL checks:
1. Check consumer unit / trip switches
2. Check neighbours / street lights (local vs property-only)
3. Then report via 105 or online
- Dangerous damage to lines/substations: 105 immediately; keep clear — high voltage can jump gaps (Prepare).
- Prepare actions during a cut:
- Unplug/turn off irons, ovens, heaters, fryers; unplug TV/PC (surge on restoration)
- Keep warm: layers, blankets, close unused rooms, curtains
- Radio for news (battery/wind-up; car radio only if weather safe to go outside)
- Keep fridge/freezer doors shut
- Check vulnerable neighbours if able
- Medical / telecare: Plan with care provider now; PSR with network operator and supplier separately.
- ENWL Extra Care / PSR: ENWL Extra Care pathway — register if eligible.
- Load block letter (national scheduled rota — unlikely but Prepare advises knowing it): look up postcode at powercut105.com or check bill.
- Food safety (FSA): Keep doors closed; discard fridge perishables if power off long enough that food rises above safe temps — FSA consumer guidance: Food safety in a power cut. GOV.UK after-flood also cites: fridge food if electricity off >4 hours; freezer if off >24 hours (flood page framing — align with current FSA page when acting).
What stops working (Prepare)
Gas boilers / heat pumps / ovens may need electricity; home broadband usually fails; mobile masts may fail if in the outage area; mains water can be disrupted in longer/wider events.
USEFUL
- ENWL social: Facebook Electricity North West; X @ElectricityNW.
- Password scheme for engineer visits (ENWL “not sure who’s at your door”).
- Planned works notices via ENWL site.
- Compensation (Guaranteed Standards / Ofgem): often automatic for long outages — confirm current ENWL/Ofgem rules; report still helps locate the fault.
- General ENWL enquiries (not power cuts): 0800 195 4141 (office hours, option for general enquiries).
Cumbria notes
- Irthington/Carlisle CA6 is in ENWL territory — 105 routes correctly; supplier (British Gas, Octopus, etc.) is not who restores the wires.
- Rural overhead lines: weather (wind, snow, trees) is a common local cut driver — Met Office warnings + ENWL map.
- Pair with Starlink Mini + Anker SOLIX for comms/lighting budget (Ch. 07, Ch. 13) — batteries are not a substitute for reporting the cut.
