Scope: Drinking water / wastewater emergencies for North West including Cumbria Carlisle area.
Last researched: 27 Sep 2026 (Europe/London).

ESSENTIAL

Emergency / problems (24h): United Utilities 0345 672 3723.
Check known incidents: Up My Street — postcode lookup; larger incidents also on UU social/press.
Report unknown issues: Online “Report a problem” or phone above.
Do not drink / boil water: UU says they contact by SMS, letterbox notice, social media, local press. Follow their instructions exactly until lifted.
Bottled water during extended loss / do-not-use: UU may set collection points with the local council; announce via email/SMS/phone + website/social/press. Priority Services customers who cannot collect may get delivery.
Priority Services: Register for extra help (disability, age, mobility, young children, medical water needs). UU Priority Services phone listed on contact pages (e.g. 0345 072 6093 — confirm on current UU contact page). Booklet/info: UU Priority Services resources.
Stop tap: Know location and that it turns freely (flood/burst/frozen pipes) — Cumberland Council + UU winter advice.
Household stock: Align with Prepare water guidance (Ch. 01 / Ch. 08) — do not rely solely on UU bottled water logistics in rural weather.

Billing vs emergency: keep emergency number separate from billing lines (0345 672 2888 / 2999 etc.).
Discoloured water after bursts/works: often sediment — follow UU incident advice; still report if unexpected.
Leak spotting in public: report to UU (they publicise high weekly fix rates).
Frozen/burst pipes prevention (Cumberland + UU): lag pipes, outdoor tap covers, disconnect hoses, heating on frost setting, open cupboards with pipes.

Carlisle/Cumbria served by United Utilities (North West). Local news often mirrors UU incident pages for low pressure / no water / discolouration.
Rural Irthington: collection points may be distant in snow — home bottled stores matter more (Ch. 05, Ch. 08).
Cross-link ENWL power cuts: pumps/treatment can be affected in wide outages — Prepare notes mains water can fail in longer events.
