05 — Cold, snow & rural Cumbria

Scope: Met Office WeatherReady / winter advice; Cumberland Council; Prepare cold-related actions; rural Irthington CA6.
Last researched: 27 Sep 2026 (Europe/London).

ESSENTIAL

Met Office warnings: Yellow/Amber/Red for snow, ice, wind — check Met Office warnings and WeatherReady seasonal advice. App alerts for your area.
Home temperature (Met Office): Aim to heat home to at least 18°C, especially for over-65s and those with health conditions; close windows at night in cold spells.
Boiler service before cold season (Met Office winter prep).
Frozen/burst pipes (UU + Cumberland):
Know and test stop tap
Lag pipes in loft/garage/outdoors
Insulated cover on outdoor taps; disconnect hoses
Heating on low / frost setting; open cupboards with pipes for heat circulation
Power + water + cold compound risk: Call 105 for power; UU 0345 672 3723 for water; keep torch, radio, water, non-cook food (Prepare).
Travel: Check Cumberland gritting map, weather cameras, Cumbria Police traffic map links before journeys; follow Do Not Travel advice.
Car winter kit (Prepare + AA/RAC-style official checklists): torch, phone charger/power bank, warm clothes, blankets, hi-vis, jump leads, food/drink, shovel, ice scraper/de-icer, first aid (see Ch. 14).
Vulnerable people: Check neighbours; PSR for energy/water; NHS winter vaccines where eligible.

USEFUL

School closures: Cumberland Council school closures page.
Waste collections may be cancelled in ice/snow — check council waste updates.
Alternative work/childcare plans if roads/schools close (Met Office).
Tyres: legal tread; screenwash with additive (Met Office).
Shap / upland Cumbria often records very low overnight temperatures in cold snaps (Met Office news examples) — rural frost pockets matter for pipes and vehicles.

Cumbria notes

Irthington / CA6: Rural lanes may not be on primary grit routes — delay journeys; keep home stocks higher than urban “pop to shop” assumptions.
Cumberland Council severe weather overview: https://www.cumberland.gov.uk/your-environment/your-community/community-safety/emergencies/severe-weather-advice
Westmorland & Furness “winter ready” is adjacent authority — Irthington sits under Cumberland; use correct council for grit/waste/schools.
Starlink Mini + Anker: cold reduces battery performance — keep power stations indoors at manufacturer operating temps (Ch. 13).
