06 — Heatwave (UK)
Scope: NHS, UKHSA, Met Office Heat-Health Alerts, Prepare hot weather. Relevant for CA6 summers even if Cumbria is cooler than SE England.
Last researched: 27 Sep 2026 (Europe/London).
ESSENTIAL
- Heat-Health Alerts: Met Office / UKHSA impact-based alerts — monitor forecasts and act on advice for North West / your postcode.
- Highest UV / heat period: Stay out of sun 11:00–15:00 where possible (NHS / Prepare).
- Hydration: Drink extra fluids; avoid alcohol, caffeine, hot drinks as main fluids (NHS). Carry refillable water if going out.
- Cool the home: Close blinds/curtains on sunny sides by day; open windows when outdoor air is cooler (night). Fans help if room temp below ~35°C (NHS).
- Clothing / outdoors: Lightweight loose light-coloured clothes; shade; sunscreen; hat; sunglasses (Prepare / NHS).
- Never leave babies, children, older adults, or pets in stationary cars (Prepare).
- Heat exhaustion vs heatstroke: Cool within 30 minutes for heat exhaustion; heatstroke = emergency 999 (Prepare / NHS). Know symptoms via NHS heatwave page.
- At-risk groups (NHS/Prepare): 65+, under-5s, pregnancy, heart/lung conditions, living alone, outdoor/manual work, top-floor flats, multiple medicines that increase heat sensitivity.
- Check on vulnerable neighbours/family; NHS 111 / GP / pharmacist if worried.
USEFUL
- Public cool spaces: libraries, shops, places of worship if travel is safe (Prepare).
- Schedule dog walks early morning / evening (Prepare).
- Vehicle prep: fluids, tyres, A/C, spare water in boot (RAC guidance via Prepare).
- Rented overheating homes: local council environmental health / Citizens Advice (Prepare / NHS).
- Power cuts in heat: ENWL summer tips; keep meds that need cooling planned; radio + water (Ch. 03).
- Safe swimming: RLSS advice (Prepare link).
Cumbria notes
- Cumbria can still hit Heat-Health Alert thresholds; rural outdoor work and poorly shaded properties matter.
- Compound risk: heat + water restrictions or power cuts — stock water per Ch. 08; Anker for fans/fridge short bursts within budget (Ch. 13).
- Met Office WeatherReady pets guidance for hot weather.
