12 — EMP / Faraday realism (UK)

Scope: Ground UK risk language in official resilience products (National Risk Register, space weather strategy, parliamentary EMP material). No bunker/Faraday-cage fantasy shopping lists.
Last researched: 27 Sep 2026 (Europe/London).

ESSENTIAL — Realistic UK framing

What official UK planning emphasises

• The public National Risk Register and related strategies prioritise plausible high-impact risks such as severe weather, flooding, pandemics, cyber affecting CNI, and severe space weather (geomagnetic storms) affecting power, satellites, GNSS/PNT, aviation.
• Severe space weather is an explicit UK preparedness theme (Met Office Space Weather Operations Centre; DSIT/BEIS-era Space Weather Preparedness Strategy). Effects of concern: grid disturbances, HF radio, satellites, timing/navigation — not Hollywood “all electronics permanently dead.”
• High-altitude nuclear EMP has been discussed in historical parliamentary Defence Committee material; government responses treat EMP within broader CNI resilience / electromagnetic environment work rather than as a household DIY shield problem.

What households should actually do (aligned with Prepare)

• Same resilience as for multi-day power/comms loss: water, no-cook food, radio, torch, meds, neighbours, PSR, paper contacts (Ch. 01, 03, 07, 08).
• Surge protection / UPS for selected kit is ordinary electrical good practice — not “EMP-proofing.”
• Trust official alerts and BBC/radio if digital networks degrade.

Faraday cages — realism

• Amateur “phone in a biscuit tin” claims are unreliable as EMP/HEMP protection (seams, antennas, testing absent).
• Genuine electromagnetic shielding is an engineering discipline (gaskets, continuity, filters) used in specialised facilities — not a Consumer DIY guarantee.
• For this household info bank: do not divert money from flood/cold/power basics into unverified Faraday bags marketed with fear.

USEFUL

• Read National Risk Register editions (2025/2026 PDFs on GOV.UK) for official likelihood/impact language.
• UK Severe Space Weather Preparedness Strategy (GOV.UK assets).
• NAO / infrastructure commentary on uneven CNI preparedness — context for why household basics still matter.
• Insurance and flood resilience remain far higher probability ROI for CA6 than EMP kits (Ch. 02, 15).

Cumbria notes

• Local credible risks: Eden/Irthing flooding, winter isolation, ENWL rural outages, water interruptions — prioritise those chapters.
• Starlink depends on satellites + ground power; extreme space weather can affect satcom/GNSS — another reason for FM radio fallback (Ch. 07).
