# Matthews Household Emergency Guide — offline use

**Start here:** open `START-HERE.html` (or `offline-hub/index.html`) in any browser — works with `file://`, no internet.

## What this is

A Faraday-bag / no-network pack for the Matthews household. Practical UK guidance for storms, power cuts, flood awareness, and snow isolation. No server, no Umbrel, no CDN required.

## How to use (3 steps)

1. **Copy zip to USB / phone** — unzip `Matthews-Emergency-Offline-Pack.zip` onto a labelled USB stick and/or phone storage (Files / Downloads). Keep the whole folder together so relative links work.
2. **Open `START-HERE.html`** — tap or double-click; it opens the offline hub. From there: full guide, PDF, Crisis Q&A, info-bank chapters, gear notes, sources.
3. **Faraday bag** — store a spare phone/tablet **powered off** in the bag, plus the labelled USB. The hub is for when the device is usable offline — not while sealed in the bag.

## Copy to devices

**Best offline pack:** use `Matthews-Emergency-Offline-Pack.zip`, or copy the **entire** `emergency-prep/` folder (minus `*.b64` junk) onto phone storage and/or a labelled USB.

1. **Phone / tablet:** Unzip or copy to Files / Downloads / Books. Open `START-HERE.html` with the browser. On iOS, Files → tap → Share → Safari/Books. On Android, Files → Chrome/Firefox.
2. **Kindle (or e-ink):** Sideload the PDF via USB, or print to PDF from the HTML.
3. **USB stick:** Keep the whole folder on a labelled USB. Store with silica gel.
4. **Laptop:** Double-click `START-HERE.html` or open via browser → File → Open.

Do not depend on cloud sync alone — the point is offline.

## Open locally

- Use `file://` / “Open file” in any modern browser.
- Hub and chapters include dark-readable high-contrast CSS and large tap targets.
- Chapter search on the hub filters titles client-side (no network).
- Markdown originals remain in `info-bank/` if you prefer any MD reader.

## Print / PDF

- Prefer the generated `Matthews-Household-Emergency-Guide.pdf` if present.
- Or: Browser → Print → **Save as PDF** (A4).
- Print §3 (family plan) and §4 (phone numbers) for the fridge.

## Faraday / EMP bag storage

Store together:

- Charged spare phone or small tablet with the pack already copied (device **powered off** in the bag)
- USB with **whole** pack: `START-HERE.html` + `offline-hub/` + guide HTML/MD/PDF + `info-bank/` + `crisis-qa.md` + this README
- Silica gel packet

**Honest limit:** Consumer Faraday bags can help shield *small, powered-off* electronics from some EMP/static/RF. They are not magic armour for the house, car, or gear left plugged in. See §13 of the guide and info-bank Ch.12.

## Annual refresh

Each year (e.g. September):

- Update phone numbers, meds, and fill-in blanks  
- Rotate water / food / batteries  
- Re-copy the whole pack (or regenerate the zip) to phone and USB after edits  
- Recharge spare device  
- Confirm Starlink account status and Anker units on-site (§13 / Ch.13)
